GM Boot Camp

Introduction to GM-ing
Have you always thought you’d enjoy GM-ing but were afraid you lacked the skills or knowledge to do so?
Are you a new-ish GM with questions – SO many questions?
Are you an experienced GM who’d like to see how others do things?
Whether you’re a player considering the jump to GM, or a veteran GM looking to connect with others and explore your craft, this event is perfect for you! This class provides the basics of GM-ing via a game session led by a TableTop-approved GM, followed by a Q&A session. While the principles of good GM-ing remain the same across all genres and titles, each GM puts applies them in his or her unique way. We encourage participants to take the class more than once to experience multiple approaches and techniques.
Each participant in the workshop receives a custom handout of materials outlining the covered topics – and is eligible for exciting door prizes given out during the event.

World Building
Do you have great ideas for a module or game world but just aren’t sure if it all “works” together? Do you want to create a custom game world but aren’t sure where to begin? Do you find yourself wondering if a given encounter will “fit” in your current campaign?
If so, this class is for you!
A rich, well-crafted, and consistent world that “feels” real and that invites players to interact with it in meaningful ways is a hallmark of successful and engaging modules and campaigns. In this, the second entry in our GM Boot Camp Series , we explore the creation of exciting worlds where you and your players can find challenge, reward and – above all – fun!
This class is designed to work for people running any RPG system. The course consists of some shared panel discussion, plus a series of breakout modules that participants may attend in any order.
Topics covered will include such key elements as:
1. Magic and technology
2. Flora, fauna, geology, and geography
3. Socio-political structure
4. Myth, religion, and taboos

Plot and Story Crafting
Do you have some great story ideas, but aren’t sure how to turn them into a story – much less a module or campaign?
Do you worry that having a plot, storylines, or threads will turn your game in a railroaded nightmare?
Do you have an active campaign with a solid storyline – but those pesky players keep getting in the way of your tale?
Struggle with story is one of the biggest frustrations that GMs face. Writing modules that have structure but feel organic is a challenge. Keeping your game on track per your plot while accommodating both the changeable nature of an RPG and the needs and whimsy of your players is an exercise in cat herding at its finest. This story helps you understand what story is and how you can keep control of the story without sacrificing the flexibility and responsiveness your players – and you – crave.
Each participant in the workshop receives a custom handout of materials outlining the covered topics – and is eligible for exciting door prizes given out during the event.

Game Prep
Are you a new GM looking for ideas about how to prepare for your first game sessions?
Are you an experienced GM who is looking for game prep tips, tricks, and techniques?
Are you running a campaign but finding that real life keeps you from being as prepped as you like?
Preparing for game sessions is one of the most stressful and frustrating aspects of running an RPG. Family and work get and the way, and while you want to be ready – but you worry that over-preparing might stifle creativity.
Each participant in the workshop receives a custom handout of materials outlining the covered topics – and is eligible for exciting door prizes given out during the event.

Encounter Creation
Are you a new GM struggling with how to build level-appropriate encounters?
Are you an experienced GM who wants to up their encounter game by providing new and interesting challenges?
Do you struggle to adjust encounters on-the-fly to fit changing party players or numbers?
Creating engaging and challenging encounters – not just combats! – for your players is a key element to running a good game. There’s a fine line between a formidable set of foes that requires players to fight smart and a TPK – or a Big Boss Monster who falls instantly to an unexpected stratagem. This course provides you with the tools and strategies you need to help build interesting planned encounters – and throw them together as needed to keep your game’s pacing on track for interesting and captivating sessions.
